Study of the Nuclear Dipole Resonance Region with Electron Scattering

This project is focused on studies of nuclear resonances, which are highly sensitive to the nuclear force and properties of bulk nuclear matter.  In particular, the dipole resonance region is correlated with the nuclear symmetry energy near saturation density.  The beam energy of the MESA accelerator and high resolution of the MAGIX spectrometers are ideal for studying low-energy nuclear resonances with electron scattering, complementary to existing measurements with other probes.  This project will investigate the N/Z dependence of the inelastic nuclear response, up to and including the dipole resonance region.  The polarized beam capabilities of MESA will also facilitate pioneering measurements of spin asymmetries in resonant states.
